Latino Famous Firsts in Sports

While Roberto Clemente may be one of the most famous, many Latinos have played a role in shaping American baseball culture. In recent years, baseball – one of the most popular sports in Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban communities – has come to have some of the greatest representation for Latino Americans. As close to a third of all Major League Baseball players are Latino, with many Latino baseball stars becoming household names like Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera and Ivan Rodriguez. Before them, there were the Latinos who first broke barriers in the sport and paved the way for future generations.

Boxing remains one of the most popular sports for the Latino community, both to watch and to compete in, with about 17% of active boxers in the US identifying as Latino. Latinos from all nations of origin have made their mark on the sport. Since its beginnings, they’ve helped shape it, and the long history of Latinos in the sport proves as much. These are some of the players that broke barriers and paved the way for future boxing stars.

American football, soccer and basketball are some of the most popular sports in the USA. Yet, all of them suffer from a lack of representation among the Latino community. While Latinos abroad enjoy representation in soccer, only 7% of players in Major League Soccer are US born Latinos. Likewise, only 4% of players in the National Basketball Association are Latino and there are less than one percent Latinos in the National Football League. This hasn’t stopped Latinos from making their mark on each sport, and breaking barriers for future Latinos.

Latinos have left their mark and made their presence known in all sports.  These are the athletes who have and continue to contribute to the diversity and representation of Latinos in all sports, and those who broke barriers in their respective sport.
